Trees are comprised of wooden fibers shaped like straws. These straws expand and contract in order to move nutrients through its length. As such, wooden cutting boards also expand and contract when they are confronted with moisture, unless they are conditioned with a stabilizing agent. At Deoria Made, we use the industry standard – food grade mineral oil. This oil penetrates deep into the wooden fibers of your cutting board. These fibers, now filled with oil, are impervious to moisture. That means when you chop strawberries, the dark red juice wipes off, rather than staining, or when you mince garlic, the flavor wipes off, rather than spoiling the board. As such, conditioning your cutting board with mineral oil is the best way of keeping it clean, impervious to warping or cracking, and looking fresh and new.
This care technique is easy, and doesn’t have to disrupt your regular cutting board cleaning regimen.
Cleaning a wooden cutting board is as simple as washing it with soap, warm water, and a sponge. As a more earth-friendly option that often works even better on tough stains, sprinkle a healthy amount of salt on the board, and with a sponge dipped in warm water, scrub the stain out. The salt absorbs the stains quite well, pulling any tastes or smells out along with it. Hand dry the board with a kitchen towel, and reach for your mineral oil to condition . . .
After cleaning, pour a liberal amount of Mineral Oil onto the surface, rubbiting it into the wood with a disposable rag. Allow a few hours for the oil to absorb, then wipe the excess off.
The aforementioned conditioning routine should be implemented once per week for the first month, once a month for the following few months, and once per season for the life of the board, though frequent use may require conditioning more often. Overtime, the cutting board will become saturated with oil, requiring less frequent conditioning.

What to Avoid
Never submerge your cutting board in water, or run through the dishwasher. The over use of water will saturate the board, making it expand, and the harsh chemicals will eventually dry the board out, making it contract. This may lead to warping or cracking.
